This home was absolutely beautiful! Very unique. Huge yard with lovely flowers and fruit trees. I would recommend anyone to stay.
Aloha, We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay and very much appreciate that you took the time to post a review. We hope that you harvested some organic fruit from the yard to add to the pleasure of morning coffee on the lanai. Looking forward to welcoming you back for your next visit to Big Island, mahalo!
Overall, the property was okay. When we came up to the property, it was beautiful - tucked in a secluded jungle landscape. Check in was easy enough, directions were clear. Will say you can absolutely tell what numbers were used for the gate, because the two numbers used were a lot more dirty then any others, so I assumed they don't change the gate code often. Large area of greenery to park, which was nice to see. Then when we actually went into the house was where things started going not so great. We didn't feel like the house was up to par with the cleanliness and felt like it was cleaned possibly surface level, but lots of dust in areas we touched, bugs, webs, etc. Sheets for the beds seem clean on the inside, but there were a lot of bugs laying on top. Then the 2 bed 2 bathroom layout was awkward. To get to one of the rooms and bathroom, you have to go through the other bathroom. It seems like part of the house was built as an attachment and to get to the attachment roombathroom, you need to pass through the main bathroom. Most of the lights but 1 in the living room did not work, so that room was unused. The biggest problem we dealt with were the bugs, which is common in Hawaii and being in a very tropical rainy location of the island, but it was excessive. Seen multiple lg/sm cockroaches a day, geckos everywhere and so was there poop, multiple other bugs just all the time. The house was not sealed well at all, gaps in doors and windows. We found the stay okay

The right vacation home is everything, and we're disappointed if this wasn't the one for you. We followed up with the homeowner after reading your feedback, and they wanted to share the following:
- You’re correct that the property has a unique layout—it was originally a redwood water tower converted into a home by a shipwright, and it has even been featured on HGTV.
- The gate keypad is outdoors and naturally exposed to the elements, but we’ll ask our landscaping team to give it extra attention going forward. In all our years of hosting, we’ve never had this mentioned before, so we appreciate you pointing it out.
- Our property manager has confirmed that the lamps in the living room are functioning. There is one bulb out in the ceiling track lighting, but replacing it would require rewiring the entire system.
- We use only nontoxic pest treatments out of consideration for families and guests with health concerns, which can mean more critters in a lush Hawaiian jungle setting. That said, we understand this can still feel excessive and will continue looking for ways to improve.
- Our guest contact did receive a question from you during your stay and responded promptly. At that time, you replied, “OK, thank you, will let you know if there’s any issues,” but no further concerns were shared. We wish we’d had the opportunity to address your feedback in real time.
Thanks for letting us know about your stay.
Private escape. We were concerned at first about no ac since we were here in June, but the breeze flowing thru was great. Even a little chilly at night. Beautiful grounds, great hot tub loved seating on the porch. Would highly recommend

Aloha Ginger, Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. We love your description, "hidden gem"! It was great to hear that you enjoyed your stay. As you observed, A/C is unnecessary because the shipwright, who converted a redwood water tower into a home, utilized traditional Hawaiian technology to facilitate a natural breeze. through the structure. We look forward to welcoming you again for more Big Island relaxation. Mahalo!
This property is all about natural beauty. There are frogs, geckos, snails, and cats. You're inevitably going to find some bugs inside the house, but nothing that'll bite you (didn't see any mosquitos). Be careful of the stairs at night, but the host has night lights around the house, so you should be ok. Other than that, this is a kid friendly place, they'll love exploring the property, which has one gate, but we still felt safe. My only gripes were that the cookware was questionable, it was a challenge to find a pan to use without a lot of scrapes on it, but this is not really the host's fault, as it's the past guests. Also, the electrical switches around the house need to be better labeled, you'll end of switching everything to see what is for what and still not know. The kitchen was stocked with essential spices and oils for cooking. The hot tub appeared to be functional, but we didn't use it.
From the Owner: "Aloha Kenneth, Many thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to post a review. We are delighted to hear about your family's experience in creating treasured vacation memories. Your suggestions for improvements are appreciated, and we will work on those issues. The mystery switches are eccentric, so we labeled them whimsically (Narnia, Pluto, etc.). Our goal is for guests to feel comfortable and safe, so we are pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back for more Big Island adventures. Mahalo!"
Charming house, but we weren’t able to use the beautiful upstairs bedroom because there were multiple geckos hanging out in there and there was feces on the bed and floor. The owner said we could change the bedspread but I was afraid they would use the bathroom on me while I was sleeping. Also there were a lot of bugs. You would always expect to see a few on most Hawaii properties, but there were obvious gaps in doors and walls where they could easily get in.Also, the ceiling fans were filthy and we couldn’t use them. The owner did offer to come and clean them, but I just didn’t feel like dealing with it so we used a floor fan. We found ONE that was clean enough to use. The rest of the house was mostly clean. Although there was also feces on the kitchen floor. The adorable geckos do poop a lot.

From the owner, "Aloha Charity, we want our guests to feel completely comfortable during their stay, so we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.
We’ve taken care of the ceiling fan issue and truly wish that you had allowed our property manager to address it during your visit as she had offered.
While geckos are common in Hawaii and help manage the insect population, we agree they can sometimes overstay their welcome. Our practice is using only nontoxic treatments and we now will be incorporating deterrents into our routine to help reduce their presence indoors. In traditional Hawaiian mythology, geckos are considered guardian spirits and bringers of good luck, and we hope that you experienced aloha spirit during your visit.
We strive to keep the home clean and welcoming, and we’re reviewing the property thoroughly to make sure every area is guest-ready moving forward.
We truly want each guest to feel at ease and are taking steps to improve both comfort and cleanliness.
Thanks again for your helpful feedback—we’re committed to making every stay as enjoyable as possible! Mahalo!"
